Description
KEYNES, John Maynard. The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1936.
First edition, first printing. Printing and the Mind of Man 423. The General Theory overturned the classical assumption that markets clear on their own, arguing that aggregate demand determines output and employment and that a modern economy can remain stuck at high unemployment. It founded modern macroeconomics, and it is the most influential work of economics of the twentieth century.
Title page reads "The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money / by John Maynard Keynes / Fellow of King's College, Cambridge / Macmillan and Co., Limited / St. Martin's Street, London / 1936." The verso carries only "COPYRIGHT" and the imprint "Printed in Great Britain by R. & R. Clark, Limited, Edinburgh," with no reprint statements, as called for in the first printing.
Publisher's dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt "The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money / J. M. Keynes / Macmillan & Co" between gilt rules, front board with blind rules at head and tail. Spine ends frayed with small losses of cloth at head and tail. Spine gilt dulled and rubbed, with parts of the title and author lettering worn. Light rubbing and a few faint scuffs to the front board, with light wear to the extremities. Title page and verso clean, with no marks. No dust jacket. A good-plus copy of the first printing.
